In praise of nature

Time and memories are like the ebb and flow of tides - they do not work in chronological order. Meandering in ways that appear to be within grasp or emerge as soft traces in far-off places.

In the heart of both realms lie nature. She is a quiet observer, teacher, healer and commentator. Through the changing seasons, relocation or emotional states of mind, she is a powerful force that shapes memory and in turn, is shaped by time. A walk through temple grounds; playing in one’s childhood garden, or a surprising gale that pummels through one’s thoughts and senses.

In the past, I sought only to capture these elusive elements through journaling. Nowadays, they are expressed in tandem through the language of nature in my creations.

My paintings are my journals. I revisit past entries to paint forgotten landscapes. Other times, torn pages make their foray into my work as a new way to mark time, or reframe it. I work with mixed media such as acrylic paint, coloured charcoals, inks, graphite and collage to create both 2 and 3-dimensional works.
